Biden Trump Comparison

BIDEN VS. TRUMP: THE CHOICE IS CLEAR

The Michigan Nurses Association elected Board of Directors considered the matter of a presidential endorsement carefully and debated thoroughly, following a motion “to continue to support candidates that have policies and actions that support health professionals’ rights in the workplace in conjunction with our mission and vision.” The Board concluded that Joe Biden is the stronger candidate for workers and health care. Please see below for a comparison of the candidates on key issues for MNA members.

ISSUE TRUMP BIDEN
Health Professionals’ Rights in the Workplace
  • Trump administration submitted brief to Supreme Court in support of nationwide "right-to-work" (Janus v. AFSCME)
  • Under Trump, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has rolled back workers’ rights and weakened the National Labor Relations Act1
  • Trump administration denied overtime pay to 8.2 million workers2
  • Supports the “PRO” Act, which paves the way for “gig” workers like Uber drivers to organize with unions, grants the NLRB the ability to penalize employers for retaliation, partially overrides right-to-work laws, creates mandatory arbitration for a first agreement if needed, and creates greater strike protections3 4
  • Supports card check policies, making it easier for workers to organize5
  • Pledges to “repeal provisions that allow states to impose ‘right to work’ laws.”6
Healthcare
  • Trump administration supports the repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which would cause millions to lose their coverage and protections for preexisting conditions
  • Trump administration is approving state Medicaid work requirements, which prevent people from receiving health care
  • Wants to protect the ACA and expand to a Medicare buy-in option while maintaining private insurance7
  • Has a plan to make prescription drugs much more affordable, including allowing prescription drugs to be bought from other countries8
COVID-19 Response
  • Trump instructed his administration to not call Governor Whitmer back about securing PPE because she was not “appreciative” enough9
  • Trump has not created a unified national strategy to combat COVID-19 – including test supplies and PPE
  • Trump has purposely misled the American public by dismissing the severity and danger of COVID-1910
  • Would create a national strategy to defeat the virus through free rapid testing, PPE, and emergency paid leave and other economic stimulus policies11
  • Has personally stated how serious COVID-19 is and has been observed wearing a face covering many times
  • Wants to put public health officials and scientists in charge of response – not politicians12
